doan hoang | portrait | san clemente

Am I allowed to play favorites? Because my cousin doan is one of my absolute fave people in this world. I love her! She is a filmmaker extraordinaire, the mastermind behind oh, saigon, an amazing documentary that will be playing again on local PBS stations. Click here to check out your local listings.

doan and I have grown closer through the years, and when we get together, we share our thoughts freely. I can listen to her stories hours on end. Luckily, Doan travels frequently so I get to see her pretty often when she visits SoCal. During her last trip, we decided to explore San Clemente and snap some portraits. Doan is so beautiful in every way. She also teaches yoga during her spare time & I was able to get a private one on one session this time around. Can you say, AWESOME?! One of our favorite things to do when she’s in town is get an hour reflexology massage for $15! Again, can you say, AWESOME?!

If you haven’t already, check out oh, saigon. It is definitely worth your time! It is showing on Tuesday, April 27 evening in most areas – please check out your local pbs listings for dates/times.

film synopsis:

“If I could put my finger on the moment my family fell apart, it would be April 30, 1975 — the end of the Vietnam War.”
– Filmmaker Doan Hoang

oh, saigon. Airlifted out of Vietnam on April 30, 1975, Doan Hoang’s family was on the last civilian helicopter out of the country at the end of the war. Twenty-five years later, she sets out to uncover their story. The film follows her family as they return to Vietnam after decades of exile, where her father, a former South Vietnamese major, meets his brothers again to confront their political differences: one was a Communist, the other a pacifist. Meanwhile, Hoang tries to reconcile her own difficult past with her half sister, who was mistakenly separated from the family during the escape.

quyen + edson | engagement | corona del mar

I first met Edson when he came to attend my sister’s wedding two years ago. Edson is the kind of guy who everyone just adores. He is super easy-going, has a heart of gold, and loves to laugh. I mean, seriously, who else would be such a good sport about punching swirly designs on my sister’s wedding menus? =P

So you can imagine how thrilled I was to hear that he proposed to my niece, Quyen – who I was very close to while growing up. In our Vietnamese culture, she is considered my niece [she is my cousin’s daughter]; however, in the American culture, I believe she is my second cousin. Quyen & I have so many fond memories together: walking to the store together to pig out on snacks, munching on French Onion SunChips, playing Chinese jump rope, learning about “Italy” in the classroom, trying [and failing many times] to translate for her, bathtime, “say liquor!”, crawfish…the list goes on! I only wish Quyen & Edson were closer! They are the cutest couple!

Quyen & Edson are from Seattle, and I am so excited to be capturing their wedding day! They are so loving and silly together. The couple met through a mutual friend at a party, and Edson was enamored from the start! Of course he would be, as Quyen is a total catch! Smart, beautiful, and super caring. I know they will be blessed with lots of goodness, because they love spreading it to others.

We first headed out to the lab in Costa Mesa for the awesome colorful decor for our session. Then it was off to corona del mar for some awesomeness at the beach. Lastly we stopped by disneyland’s downtown disney district for some fun in the store!

I can’t begin to tell you all how happy I am to witness their marriage this summer. I hope they’ll love their slideshow as much as I loved putting it together!

james kyson lee | portrait | los angeles

Some of you may remember james kyson lee’s photo shoot last summer. This session was such a creative and artistic undertaking! James wanted a Korean-pop/Japanese-pop look for his session, so we went for for bold colors, dramatic looks, and a fabulous backdrop. James has a very unique style, and you can tell from his wardrobe selection. I was envious of his truckload of clothes! ;)

A few weeks after the session, James announced that he was revamping his website. And guess what? He used the images from the shoot for his new website! How AWESOME is that?! I was so flattered and excited to see the new site! He also featured our photos on his Twitter profile and background!

Check out the home page and headers!

James featured me on the links page! =)

That’s not it! Soon after our shoot, James e-mailed me and let me know that one of our photos made it on the cover of a spanish site! spanish speakers may read the story here…perhaps someone can e-mail me a translated version! =P

James is a very cool guy, and if you all haven’t checked out his NBC series, Heroes, make sure you do! His character, ando masahashi, is hilarious and evolving – can’t wait to see what happens next! You can check out the rest of James’ work on imdb.

Big thanks to James for all of his support! I have to admit, James has a pretty kick-ass website! :D

Connect with me on FB! =)

janis + an | engagement | storm king art center | new york

Janis. She’s the one. She’s the one who finishes my sentences. She’s the one who laughs at all of my super awesome stories. She’s the one who I can talk to (or just be on the phone in silence) for hours on end. She’s the one you go to if you want dirt on me. She’s the only one who is just as silly as I am. The one I’ve known since high school. My inseparable. My BFF. My “almost-boyfriend.” That’s Janis. My Janis. The one who is getting married. =)

I love this girl…and I am so excited that she and her fiancé, An, are getting hitched! These two were completely made for each other.

Since Janis moved to New York, I often take spontaneous trips to visit since NY is one of my favorite cities. On my last trip, we went to storm king art center for a double-date picnic, and I whisked Janis & An away for a casual engagement session. It was a chilly but very pretty autumn day.

Out of the two, An is definitely more of a ham. =P They are so freakin’ cute and quirky together.

“I realized that, even if I tried, I could not get rid of this guy. He was always going to be in my life…” This is how Janis described their serendipitous encounters throughout the years. I love their adorable save-the-date (Janis drew the background) as you can sense their personalities through the image:

STD

Janis & An will be getting married at a beautiful ranch in France this summer. I cannot wait to stand by her side as she says “I do” to the love of her life.

Congrats again to Janis & An!!

melissa + glenn | wedding | downtown sacramento

When Melissa sang Adele’s “make you feel my love” to Glenn in church, my heart completely melted. Such a beautiful song, such meaningful lyrics. A perfect ballad for the two lovebirds! =)

I met Melissa & Glenn through lenore bernales, a friend and wedding planner in the San Francisco Bay Area. Lenore contacted me for her good friend’s wedding, and with Lenore and her husband, Allan, behind the artistic design, I knew the wedding was going to be ahhh-mazing! The details definitely did not disappoint! The dynamic husband and wife team seriously know how to transform visions & dreams into beautiful, classy events!

Melissa and Glenn shared their vows at st. ignatius church and the reception took place at the lovely tsakopoulos library galleria in downtown sacramento, CA. I loved the green walls of the Church and the idea of a wedding in a library gallery! Pretty awesome. The day went by quickly, but the moments shared between Melissa and Glenn are timeless. Here are some of my favorite images from their special day!
